Statement Of William J. Clinton
I am heartbroken over the loss of Paul and Sheila Wellstone, their daughter Marcia, Paul’s staff and the pilots.
The people of Minnesota, America and the world have lost a friend and a champion of working families, the poor, the disenfranchised and the disabled.
Paul’s public life was a profile in courage. He spoke, stood and voted on his principles, even at the risk of his political career. Ultimately, he gave his life in public service, in the midst of working hard to earn another term. Just this week, he said, "I am blessed to be a Senator from Minnesota." America was blessed to have a Senator like Paul Wellstone.
Hillary and I are proud to have known Paul and Sheila and their family. I will always be grateful for Paul’s support and friendship over the years and for the work Sheila did to protect victims of domestic violence and to promote world peace.
Our prayers are with the Wellstones’ children, David and Mark, their grandchildren, and the families of all who perished.
May the grace of God and the memories of their lives and good works give them strength and solace in their sorrow.

I had the chance to meet Sen. Wellstone during the '98 campaign. He was a fantastically commited and passionate public servant who's loss is a tremendous one to the US Senate.
