IRONIC

I've got a Harley Davidson t-shirt I have no business wearing (ask anyone who knows me). Maggie made me a "Nancy Pelosi Rocks It" shirt I adore. I still have my old Broadway Cast Show League softball jersey, for days I'm feeling it.

But the new Urban Outfitters "VOTING IS FOR OLD PEOPLE" shirt just make me sad. I understand why it might be funny, but I'm not sure anyone needs any more help being disaffected.

If I thought it was supposed to be an actual statement about the electoral process - I'd shut up. But it's just a cynical grab for teen cash. Sad, I say.

MILA

I'm not often asked to give music advice. Financial, relationship, political and very often drink advice - but not music. I don't have the energy or interest to pursue music as a hobby. I'm pretty happy just taking stuff from friends who insist I listen to whatever they like. I'm fine with that.

However, there is one woman (and her band) I've been listening to for 10 years - and she's fantastic. So, I offer this advice:

The Mila Drumke Band is playing at Fez. If you're in New York, go see her. If you're not, then just buy her last CD, Hip to Hip. .

ALWAYS IN THREES

This has been a very bad week for dogs.

Yesterday, President & Mrs. Bush had to put down their dog, Spot. Spot was born at the White House 15 years ago, when Bush Sr. was President. The dog was one of only two witnesses who caught the president's fainting spell after he choked on a pretzel.

It's sad that even the First Dog can't live forever.

Worse yet -
On Thursday, Heather and Derek's little Chihuahua Tigger was attacked by an off-leash dog in Yerba Buena Park. Tigger passed away that day.

Heather and Derek really loved Tigger and his buddy Cheika. Tigger was a little guy who acted like a tough kid. He was funny and very fun to hang out with. And Tigger was my favorite friend on Friendster.

He was a blast.

And lastly -
On Tuesday, my Mom, Dad, brother and sister all took our 15 yr-old dog Zoe to the vet, where she was put to sleep.

I found Zoe late one night while out delivering pizzas. She was hurt, cold and scared - having been tossed out of a car on the nearby highway. She was a puppy then, and I thought I'd take care of her for just a few weeks while she got better - and then I'd find her a home.

After 3 years of school, as I planned to head up to New York City, I asked my Mom and Dad to watch her for a few weeks, while I got set up in my new home. That was 1992. Ever since, she's been with my Mom and Dad, her best friend Sigmund (the sweetest/dumbest Black Lab in the world) and the cats she always secretly loved.

My favorite part of coming home to Colorado was seeing Zoe just freak out as I came in the house. Mom asked me to say hello each time in the yard - because Zoe would usually get so excited, so spastic that she'd pee just a tiny bit. It was pretty funny.

Zoe was a jealous bitch, too. She get very protective of me and didn't like it when I brought girls around. Last Christmas, she could tell that things were getting serious with Maggie. Zoe picker her moment to assert herself as the Alpha-dog; she was acting perfectly very sweet, even affectionate and then, when I was looking, Zoe snapped in the air at Maggie. Maggie immediately grabbed Zoe by the scruff of the neck (just as Maggie and I talked about), looked her straigh in the eye, and made it very clear that MAGGIE was the woman in my life now.

They earned each other's respect and got along just fine after that.

Zoe was very fast and just wicked smart - learning how to open doors, slip past electronic fences, and evade capture by several dog-catchers over the years.

But she was 15 years old. She had a good life, she was well loved, and my Mom and Dad took fantastic care of her to the very end.

I will miss her.

DOCTOR MY EYES

So, Governor Dean has pulled his name from the hat... and it's well timed. His supporters have been among the most passionate of the contest, but passion does not sway opinion - and most Americans remained unswayed.

Governor Dean tapped into an excitement for real Democratic values, a desire for an agressive agenda, and the power of a fantastic stump speech. I hope the others, Kerry particularly, take a page or two from his playbook.

Jackson Browne seemed to write this song for today:
As I've wandered through this world
As each moment has unfurled
I've been waiting to awaken from this dream
People go just where they will
I never notice them until I've got this feeling
That it's later than it seems

Doctor my eyes
Tell me what is real
I hear their cries
Just saying "It's too late for me"
Indeed it is.

PRESIDENT'S DAY

I have a genuine fascination with the office of President of the United States. I'm working my way through all the major biographies. Here are some things I find interesting about the Presidents from my lifetime:

Richard Millhouse Nixon
People forget that Nixon lost the 1960 presidential race to John F. Kennedy. And then lost the California Governors race two years later. Nixon's mother wanted him to become a Quaker missionary; Nixon wanted to be an FBI agent. His letter of resignation was as follows: "Dear Mr. Secretary: I hereby resign the office of the President of the United States. Sincerely, Richard M. Nixon."

Gerald Rudolph Ford
He was born Leslie Lynch King, never won an election on the presidential ticket. Also, two women tried to kill him as President: Lynette (Squeaky) Fromme, a follower of Charles Manson, and political activist Sara Jane Moore. Ford was once a male model.

Jimmy Earl Carter
The first President ever born in a hospital is also a speed-reader (he's been clocked at 2000 words a minute.) Though he is regarded as having a terrible economic record, he made himself a millionaire with his family's peanut farm. He was one of only three presidents to attend one of the Unites States military academies (Annapolis) and he has just one nut (testicle).

Ronald Reagan
Reagan, the oldest president in history (69-77 years old), was the first president who had been divorced (he married Oscar winner Jane Wyman at Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, CA). Reagan was the only president to be a head of a labor union (SAG), was the only president to be wounded and survive an assassination attempt, and was the only president to have ever worn a NAZI uniform. (He wore it as an actor in a movie.) .

George Herbert Walker Bush
Bush was the only President to be: Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Chairman of his political party, and Ambassador to the United Nations. Bush is related to Benedict Arnold and Marilyn Monroe and is also distantly related to Presidents Pierce, Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and Ford, and to Winston Churchill.

William Jefferson Clinton
Clinton, the only President ever to be elected twice without ever receiving 50% of the popular vote, was mauled by a sheep when he was about eight years old. Bill Clinton was the first and only president to have been a Rhodes Scholar. He was born William Jefferson Blythe, 4th, after his late father. He legally changed his last name to that of his stepfather when he was 16.

George Walker Bush
Bush, the first president to hold Little League baseball tryouts on the White House lawn, invented the word "strategery." He likes to call himself "43" and his Dad "41", though there have only been 42 Presidents (Cleveland won two, non-consecutive terms.) He, President Hayes, and President Harrison, lost the popular vote. He was once fell to the ground, unconscious in the White House, after choking on a pretzel.

1.5 Gallons

I learned this morning, as I enjoyed a free apple-fritter, that I am a member of the One-Gallon Club at the Blood Center of the Pacific. In fact, it seems that I passed the one gallon mark in 2002, and am well on my way to a second gallon donated.

I got a key chain and a lapel pin.

Enjoy my A Negative, everyone!

THE NEWLYWEDS

Mabel Teng, the City Assessor here in San Francisco, issued the first marriage license to same sex couples today. This is the first time in the United States that a government (city, state or fed) has issued such licenses.

Maggie and I got our San Francisco County marriage certificate in the mail just a few weeks ago. I couldn't be happier for the newest newlyweds!

Please Kindly Stop F&#^ing So Loudly

I did not write this, but I am changing "New England" to "Bay Area", printing it on my letterhead, and slipping it under the door above me...
Dear third-floor tenant,

I've never met you, but while living above you in this ramshackle apartment, we have shared too many intimate moments. I have watched television while hearing you moan. I have eaten dinner while hearing your girlfriend squeal. I have gone to sleep to the soothing sound of muffled conversation such as "Oh god, yeah" and "I want you so bad." One time, as I was getting dressed for work, I heard a smack so loud that there is no doubt someone's ass gained a permanent handprint.

Don't get me wrong, here. When I signed my lease, I applauded the free heat and cheap rent...

GOOD NIGHT SWEET PRINCE

So, Earl has left us.

Two plus years ago, Maggie and I went to the San Francisco Charity Car Auction and came home with a 1987 Ford Ranger - a 14-year-old pick-up with 160,000 miles for less than a months rent.

After Earl took me to Utah for the Olympics, to every corner of the Bay area, and helped me propose to Maggie, he's going to head over to the East Bay Habitat for Humanity. From charity to charity...

Goodbye.

PURE JOY

This is just too, too much fun.

2.04.2004

STILL FUNNY

It's still so damn funny... when Joe enlisted he was a Private Hoar.
Then he was a Major Hoar. Then finally he was a General Hoar.

I really do like the guy... but friends used to come over and play at the Hoar house...oh, God I shouldn't find it this funny.

GI JOE

I like General Joseph P Hoar, USMC (Ret.)

Gen. Hoar came from his home in CA to take part in the rally we built on Saturday. He did it because he really likes Gov. Dean and because he wants to see this sort of Commander-in-Chief.

Three things about the General

1) I met him the night before the event, in our hotel lobby. He was soft spoken, kind, and sort of grandfatherly. Then, once we handed him the mic for the Saturday 9AM rally, he was every bit the General you'd expect from the Marines. He commanded the troops, he commanded our respect, and spoke as a principled man who cares deeply for the country he served for 37 years.

2) As the rest of Tucson was trying to get a piece of Gov. Dean, The General was talking with a 13-year-old boy in a Marine Corps sweatshirt -- I have no idea what they were talking about, but it was important to the boy, and so it was clearly important to the General as well. I'll never know what was going on (I was on the other side of the stage), but for some reason, I keep flashing back to that moment.

3) I want to be able to say "General Hoar" without giggling. Of course he was a Marine: if I had a name like "Joe Hoar", I too would be as tough as any drill instructor by the time I got out of middle school...

It was a pleasure to meet him.

DEAN ON THE DESSERT II

Thank You to all who sent folks to Tucson. We had a great number of volunteers and an amazing number of people attend the rally. The papers say 1500-2000 people attended, the local camapign says 2500-3000; either way, it was great.

Here is what we managed to put together between Thursday at 1PM and Saturday at 9AM --
